- Mefodi mRussian: from the Late Greek personal name Methodios ‘fellow traveller’ (from meta with + hodos road, path). St Methodius (d. 885) and his brother Cyril (d. 869) together evangelized the Slavonic region of Moravia in present-day Czechoslovakia. It was Methodius who first translated the Bible into Slavonic, although the cyrillic alphabet devised for this purpose bears his brother's name.Cognates: Polish: Metody.
